Welcome to Wave Goodbye to the Patriarchy! This site is dedicated to the task of inspiring and conspiring waving goodbye to the patriarchy and sharing art and spellwork (and all my art is spellwork) that invokes that. Travel around the site, check out the art, find out about me and my co-conspirators, and consider joining in on the mighty spell of waving goodbye to the patriarchy! - Deborah Oak

“Art is spirituality in drag.”

— Jennifer yan

Feminist art is not some tiny creek running off the great river of real art. It is not some crack in an otherwise flawless stone. It is, quite spectacularly I think, art which is not based on the subjugation of one half of the species. It is art which will take the great human themes -love, death, heroism, suffering, history itself -and render them fully human. It may also, though perhaps our imaginations are so mutilated now that we are incapable even of the ambition, introduce a new theme, one as great and as rich as those others -should we call it joy?
— Andrea Dworkin

Andrea Dworkin was a controversial second wave feminist who I disagreed with on many things. But I agree with her about art and feminism. And it tickles me to quote her on this site, as she waved goodbye with grim gusto. She was a prototype of of a 1970’s humorless, not sex positive feminist (which was so NOT my experience) so I particularly love that she invokes joy here in regards to art. Joy, I believe, is a political act. Experiencing joy is to connect to the sacredness of the life force. I’m drawn to art in any form that elicits joy. I appreciate, respect and am moved by art that bears witness to oppression and expands our ability to empathize. And, being a therapist who works up close and personal with human suffering, I crave art that lifts my spirits and makes my heart sing. No surprise this is also what I strive to create.
